2005

I like Christmas because it is a good excuse for a Jewish individual like me to do absolutely nothing for a few days. Aside from by bunk ass Chinese food dinner I hat Thursday night, I accomplish little more than Chris Farley movies, wine and assorted sports in High Definition. I was kind of drunk Christmas eve and went outside at 4:00 AM or so to see if I could spot Santa in the sky. No luck.

Ian admitted to me today that he does not like magnets. That is kind of lame. Who doesn’t like magnets? They are so cool.

Alright, well the year 2004 is all but coming to an end. It was a good year I would have to say. On to 2005. We now must refer to everything Red Sox and all the wonderful things they did in 2004 as LAST YEAR. I am going into New York City tonight after work. Hopefully Jo-Anne will let me get out early so I can get one a good train and make it in on time. The plan for the evening is a club by the name of Fuelray. Unce, unce, unce – lets hope not. Its only $100 so I am happy. Better then the $275 option Aimi had going. Aimi, you rock, but I am not paying $275 just to sit at a table for the sake of sitting at a table.

My friend Michael got back from Japan. He was there for some time – well over a year. I took the opportunity to fill him in on all the pop culture stuff he missed out on and all the bullshit you don’t hear about when you are in the orient. Paris Hilton is kind of popular. Low Carb diets are popular. On the Asia note, I am really saddened by what has happened. I don’t think I have ever witnessed a natural disaster of this proportion in my lifetime, and I hope to never see one again. I know only like 6 people view this blog, but you should definitely step it up and go to amazon.com to donate money to the relief effort.

The new Treo 650s are here. I like them a lot, although I am seeing some problems with the data dropping while on Sprints bush-league CDMA network. The Cingular (Orange) unites should be in my February lets hope. Sticking with technology, I am back on the BitTorrent wagon. I used it at first when it was first released, but then took a hiatus from it. Maybe it was due to the lack of content that existed or the slow speeds. It is running at full gear right now I think. I also like how the dude that created it has Aspergers Syndrome. There is an interesting article here about the software, how it is developed and where P2P is heading in the future.

I was told not to make any arrangements to go anywhere the last week of January by my boss, but he did not specify why. Hopefully ill go to Winter X, but I am not sure. I could end up having to go to training in South Windsor, or hey, maybe I’ll have to work second shift that week. Should be interesting to see how it pans out.

I saw Napoleon Dynamite last night. Good times. The entire movie was just hilarious and out of this world. Everything that Pedro or Napoleon did was just plain awkward and enjoyable to watch. It kind of makes me glad that I did not grow up in Idaho.

I can not think of anything else. Some 2005 predictions: The Red Sox win the World Series again. Dick Chaney has a heart attack. Sirius and XM either merge with one another or one buys out the other. The population in Mexico City grows. A human is cloned. I get a promotion. Michael Moore is hospitalized. A major airline goes bankrupt. The Patriots beat the 49ers on Sunday.

Thank you.

Not much is going on really. Of course, like every other year in my life so far, I have not made it to the Fantasy Football playoffs. It is amusing to watch my friends as they roll with the ups and downs of Michael Vick being their starting QB or neglecting to start TE Eric Johnson. We are hosting a gathering at our place this evening. Anywhere from 12 to 25 people may show up. We purchased an assortment of 96 beers yesterday. I purchased a Polk Audio surround sound home theater speaker package last week. Two front speakers, two rears, a center speaker and a sub woofer. I am still figuring out how the hell to make it sound its best and which one of the 2,000 modes the receiver should be on. The company holiday party was this past Thursday night. I would say the attendance was anywhere between 4,500 and 5,000 people. It is at a nice banquet hall with open bar and free food all night. And some bands, comedy and magicians showing off their stuff. Probably the biggest party I have ever been to in my life. I am glad I did not do anything stupid. That and getting home safely were my only two goals really. Oh, and too eat a lot of food. That goal, unfortunately, I did not accomplish.

I got all 11 games of the ALCS and WS burned onto DVD's. It is cool, but odd watching the games in full. Game 6 was interesting. It really showed how classless and at times clueless NY Yankees fans are. And the A-Rod slap play was great to watch again. That play just shows he is not a winner at all. I saw the Bourne Supremacy the other night. It was alright - not as good as the first. It would have been better if it did not all take place at night. Besides that, it had good action and car chases. If you have not seen the first, you should before you see Supremacy.

It is important to know that this Bush Administration still sucks. During the run up to the election, just about educated individual was aware of that. Do not be distracted by the approaching NFL playoffs, the cold weather, or the low crab craze. Looking back, it is really amazing how our country is so divided and so stupid. I mean, look where the red states are and where the blue states are. Educated people and highly regarded education institutes are just about all located in blue states. Did you ever wonder why the ESPN Dale Earnhardt movie did so well the other week? The United States Election day rolled around and John Kerry lost. Everything then flies under the radar for a bit and we put all that stuff behind us, as we move on and adjust to four more years of lies, deceit and mismanagement. Just remember, Iraq is still a total disaster right now. It isn’t getting any better at all. Elections are coming up and it is only going to get worse.

Oh man

Alright, so I am currently in Mexico City. This place is unlike any city I have been to in my life. It is gigantic. It doesn't seem like it ends. The one thing that sticks out is the amount of cars and the bad air. There are so many cars here in is unreal. They do not even know where to put them. Cars are parked on the sidewalks, on the street and just about anywhere you can find a spot. The traffic lights use the traditional red yellow and green system, but no one seems to honor the signals. You really have to be careful when crossing the street. As someone told me, there are no rules here.

Our hotel is a nice one, big it really it is a strange location as the office we are working at is in the middle of an industrial zone outside the city. I ventured into the Polanco area of the city today, it was a nice little area. It had all sorts of designer shops and stores as well as little restaurants and bars. Every nice store had armored guards in front with semi automatic machine guns. It took almost an hour each way to get there and now I have a huge headache and feel like I smoked 6 packs of cigarettes. We are having problems getting the ENPS and proxy servers up as of now, so I am yet to do any work on upgrading the 21 clients, which is my role here. With an expected departure of Saturday morning, I think I will not sleep until then. That sucks. Lets hope Radia works.

The culture in the office is much different of course. You can smoke cigs anywhere in the office which is interesting. Also, the keyboard is much different, but that should not be a surprise. People take siestas in the afternoon and just close down shop while they do so. It also seems as if people don't start work until later in the morning.

The Treo here has been money. Full data and coverage everywhere I have been on Telcel GSM or Moviestar GSM. The Red Sox have signed Matt Mantai. Not really sure what the deal with that dude is. He had an 0 and 3 record last season with an 11 ERA and he has been plagued with shoulder injuries. But Curt says he is good, so Ill take his word. Yes, and In Theo We Trust.

Giant Robots that like to eat Brie

I am currently listening to Lou Reed. I started with iTunes on random, but was not happy with the selections. If I put my iPod on shuffle mode, I guarantee you that "Too Long in Exile" by Van Morrison will play. It is really odd. I think the shuffle mode on iTunes and on iPods has a mind of its own.

First off, I would like to say that brie cheese may be one of the best things ever. It is one of 3 or 4 products that I really have no will power to stop eating. If you were to put 2 pounds of brie in front of me, I would eat it all.

On Saturday morning, I visited Lock Stock and bagel for my first time. Two thumbs up. Andy informed me upon arrival that the Everything bagel was "one of the best everything bagels he has ever had." That is a bold statement. It was pretty darn good I would have to say. The store is close to the U of Hartford campus. With that comes the jappy girl crowd in there. My observation about the jappy girls from U of H opposed to the ones from Syracuse University is that the U of H ones are the AAA tier as opposed to the Syracuse ones, which are seasoned professionals playing big league ball. It is almost as if the SDT chapter at U of H is a training ground for those who wish on moving up in the ranks. It is kind of hard to explain. If you went to Syracuse for four years and then saw these jappy girls at U of H, you would know what I mean.

After much delay and procrastination, I have decided it is about time to make the big purchase: a home theater receiver. I have owned a 42"
Mitsubishi HDTV for over a year and it has been almost a waste to not invest in a good quality receiver to supplement the wonderful television I invested in. I am close to pulling the trigger on the Yamaha HTR-5070 model. My TV is silver as well as my DVD player, so I would like to stay consistent with the color of my components. If anyone knows where I can find a single disk CD player in silver, please do let me know. I am not a home audio expert, but I can tell you two things I learned from Josh. Total harmonic distortion is very important. You want it to be as low as possible. The HTR-5070 has a THD of .06 which is great. The important stst is watts. You want a shitload of watts.

I was in San Francisco last month for the
CTIA Wireless conference. The conference was highlighted by the announcement of the Treo 650 release. Unfortunately, it will be Sprint who will offer it on their network. From what I am being told, Cingular will have it by the end of February. During my stay there, I was lucky enough to have some free time to explore the city by the bay. My first stop was a trip on the MUNI to the Haight-Ashbury region of the city. Upon arrival, I was intrigued by a store called Giant Robot. Giant Robot, as well as Kid Robot (which was located down the street) are two stores that specialize in "Urban vinyl toys" or “Designer Toys”. Most of these toys are created by artists in the USA, Japan, Hong Kong, as well as Europe. These toys, beautiful artwork and literature have started to gain popularity in the United States over the last several years. The above hyperlink will talk about the toys, artists and culture in more detail better than I can explain. So anyways, to make a long story short, I purchased a heady piece of artwork there (approximately 30" x 16") and picked it up at the frame store Saturday morning. It looks awesome and am delighted with the purchase. It is a little dude in a bedroom full of absolute chaos. This bedroom may actually be perched up in a treehouse type thing, but I am not sure. Regardless, the room contains vinyl records, lots of blank CD's, computer equipment, mini action urban vinyl figures and old Chinese food boxes. It is one of a kind. I knew I wanted to get it the second I saw it. In a way, it kind of represents my life. I am not completely sure how, but I think it does.

The rest of Saturday included a trip to the mall. I shop at the Gap way too much. I somehow try to ditch the place, but I am unable to. I have started to shop more at Banana Republic, but somehow always fall back to the Gap. It is strange. I think they don’t mess up men’s clothes because they stick to style and don’t try to do anything crazy – and it is good quality. I was there several weeks ago and was able to obtain a “Friends and Family” card from a women named Angela. I asked her if she wanted to be my friend, and she presented me with the card. Good how that stuff works. Well, today I loaded up on clothes and as I was leaving I saw Angela. She asked me if I would like to attend a coffee and breakfast thing they were having at 8:30 AM on Sunday morning. I thanked her, but informed I would not attend. There is no way I was going to wake up at 8:30 AM on a Sunday morning and go to the Gap. (n.b. Ian was invited to the Bristol Starbucks Christmas party not too long ago, but did not attend). Next, one of us will be invited to the McDonalds Hanukah party.

The afternoon concluded with a stop to Halls 2 Go Market. Andy was looking forward to purchasing a steak and cheese sandwich off the grill. He had consumed several in the past and had nothing but good things to say about the pricing, quality and taste of the sandwich. It is important to remember that Andy is a very harsh food critic (the Everything Bagel at Lock Stock only got a 9). When we got to Halls at 5:40 PM, we discovered that the grill had closed at 5:00. That was a letdown, but not a career ender. The market has a wide selection of hot meals and sides. We ended up purchasing a pound of Swedish Meatballs and devoured them standing up in our kitchen using toothpicks. Fucking A those are good. It is only the second time in my life I have ever had them. I have visited two different cities in Sweden (Stockholm and Malmo) and never had any. Do they even serve them in Sweden? Anyways, Jamaican Beef Patties and Swedish meatballs are two things in my life I have started to eat recently. I have said “Man, I wish I had known about those two things sooner.” But in retrospect, it is probably a good thing I got a late start.

That night we attended a wine and cheese party and Jen’s house. It was a delightful time with superb food and drink. The fireplace was in full effect, the spirits were high and there was plenty of Sangria, cheese and candy to go around.

I am currently listening to an instrumental version of Lapdance by The Neptunes.

First Tube

The Pork Sampler at Little Marks BBQ was great tonight. After a nice drive up 44 through Avon, we ended up at a little white shack. Unfortunately, the Saloon was empty. We were told by Tracy that the Mac and Cheese was unbelievable. I disagree, as does Inappropriate Andy. But mmm, the ribs were good. Ian and Katie the waitress really hit it off. Katie was really hot, but she eats too much BBQ I think (she had a BBQ Butt). Katie is heading down to Miami the end of January to go clubbing.

David Robinson

Where do I begin? I met David Robinson in the summer of 1984. I was backpacking through the Anredica region of Bolivia when I ran into a young David on the streets. Disoriented and confused, I had been without food, water of money for 6 days or so. David was kind enough to provide me with a watermelon and phat suede Pumas in size 9.5 to sooth my aching feet. The legacy of David would continue. As Alpha Beta President at Syracuse in 1999, he was a leader to us all. His handling of trade sanctions with Canada and Mexico brought the economy to record levels. His international relations with countries and institutions around the world continues to be a model for world leaders even as I speak. On the domestic level, David can be credited for many accomplishments. His standardization of the paper size to 8.5 by 11 inches saves corporations millions of dollars a year. David is also responsible for developing the technology necessary to synchronize the timing of flashing traffic lights around the country; most notably in Arizona and West Virginia.

The bonds that David formed and the people he has met has been an inspiration to us all. In the summer of 2002, he appointed Jonathan Wise as Director of the 8400 Society. Jon continues to excel at the position to this day. David played minor league baseball for 4 years in the Minnesota Twins farm system before retiring due to reoccurring jock itch.

In closing, what I remember most about David is his will to succeed and his guitar playing abilities. He is currently spending time in his secluded Southfield, Michigan studio where he is recording his first album. Yet to be named, this album includes the contributions of Benmont Tench, the longtime pianist for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. We wish them both success.

Dell Jukebox, etc.

I know only two people that have the Dell Jukebox. Andy (el Hombre de Negativo) and Alexa. I have given Alexa's email to Andy so they can have some sort of exchange of their thoughts and ideas about this Dell product. It should be interesting to see how it works out.

It should be important to note that although I am a strong supporter of Dell, I own a 40 GB 3G iPod. It is the first Apple product I have owned and I am happy with my purchase. I do not foresee myself purchasing a Macintosh computer in the future.

Looks like IBM is planning to sell their personal computing business so they can focus on the [more lucrative] corporate server business. I feel that is big news. Yes, that would bring us to the end of an era in an industry that IBM helped invent. Ohh well. That kind of reminds me of Sony and TiVo in a way. Sony revolutionized the portable music player in the 1980's. With difficult competition from the iPod (as well as other solid state music players) Sony is
struggling to re-invent themselves and get back into a game they created. Good luck with that Sony. I was a huge MiniDisc supporter for years. There is a time and place for it. It is a great product. I could even give you the "It is really popular in Europe and Asia" speech, but I will not. I have invested a great deal of money into the product with the purchase of 4 portable players in my life (Sony MZ-R3, Sony MZ-R70, Sharp MD-MS702, Sony MZ-N707). The reason why I left was partially because of the Musicmatch/OpenMG software you had to rely so heavily on to manage your music. Do you honestly think Sony has any business writing computer software? Regarding the TiVo pararell: TiVo is now loosing out to MSO's (Comcast, Charter, Cox, RCN, etc.) who are providing DVR technology on their own devices (made by Scientific Atlanta and Motorola). My Comcast DVR on my Motorola STB is money. It is probaly 1000 times faster than a TiVo system - and it is built into the GUI.

Mexico D.F.

Yes it is around that time again. We are in December. What does that mean? Dumb American Idol concerts. Why is it whenever people see someone like Clay Aiken or Kelly Clarkston on TV they immediately get all defensive about them and say stuff like "Dude, she really is a good singer." People seem to do the same for Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson. This time of year means people at work in their cubes listening to the same Christmas CD on repeat all day. I do not back that. It also means total disregard for Hanukkah. Last year they security guy in Building A kept placing the menorah the wrong way. Every time I told him to change it, he said that he was not allowed to and that Alicia told him it had to be that way.

I am going to Mexico City on Tuesday morning. It should be interesting. Can you get any more central Mexico than that? Myself and other are upgrading some computers there for work. I will be bringing with me several DVD's, a big USB drive and my Treo 600. I look forward to eating Mexican food and buying something there I do not need.

Some good acronyms: PGGT (Pint Glass Gin and Tonic), PAM (Potentially Awkward Moment), CBYD (Call Before You Dig)

I received a copy of the 2004 Boston Red Sox Media Guide the other day from Inappropriate Andy. It has a wealth of information on everything Red Sox. Data overload. It will either sit on my desk or go in the bathroom. It would also make a great holiday gift for an autistic child.I need to get a new gym bag. I currently have a Polo Sport bag I got sophomore year in High School. It is the type you get for free with a $40 or more purchase of any Polo Sport fragrance.

My biggest challenge this week has been trying to get my wallet, Treo, cell phone, iPod and jacket out of my car and upstairs when I get home from the gym. I take all those things out and leave them in the car before I enter The Leisure Centre.

I do not like Barry Bonds* at all. I think it is funny that him and Giambi testify for a Grand Jury because they are told they will have total immunity. Of course, somehow the SF Chronicle gets a copy of the Grand Jury testimony. How do Grand Jury testimonies get leaked?

Ellis Burks wears size 9.5 Timberlands

My friend Ben met Ellis Burks today here on the ESPN campus. Ellis is trying out for a position for ESPN MLB remote telecasts.

I bought a pair of brown Timberland shoes size 9.5 at Bazilians the other week. I wore them for three days before I started to hear an annoying squeaking noise come from the sole of my left foot. Upset about this, I went back the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving Bazilians to return them. Upon arrival at the front desk, the clerk (and possibly the owner) asked me if I had wore them outside yet. I said "No, I have not. I have only wore them inside." Why he did not stop me, I do not now. The shoes were still wet, altogether I did do my best job to wipe them down with a paper towel I found in my old apartment. I then promptly picked up a new pair of the shoes in 9.5 and left the establishment. Squeak aside, I love these shoes. So much so, I purchased the same pair in black from Timberland.com for $65. The funny thing is the squeak came back in the new pair of brown ones. The squeak is yet to appear in the new black ones.

The DVD of the 2004 World Champion Boston Red Sox
hits the stores today. It is titled Faith Rewarded: The Historic Season of the 2004 Boston Red Sox. I will purchase it eaither today or this weekend. It should be much better than the one put out by MLB which focuses primarily on the World Series.
